Skidmore College

A simple, bold philosophy

At Skidmore College, we declare that Creative Thought Matters. Not just in the arts, but in science, business, economics, the humanities, and every other endeavor. We have an altogether different way of doing things here, and it all starts with our commitment to creative thinking.

When Creative Thought Matters ...

    1. You're empowered to combine different ideas, try new things, and look at the world from a wide range of perspectives.
    2. You're invited to participate in an interdisciplinary, liberal arts experience where combining passions and pursuits with being yourself — even if that's a work in progress — is the norm.
    3. You're challenged to explore edges, break boundaries, and find inspiration at the intersections of academic, scientific, and artistic modes of discovery.
    4. You're supported by a community where creative pursuits are honestly and humbly imperfect, because process is valued over perfection.
    5. You're accepted. In a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just community, creative thinking brings us together.

What does "Creative Thought Matters" mean?

Anyone you ask this question at Skidmore will have a slightly different answer. And each one will still be exactly right. It means something a little different to each of us.

"Creative Thought Matters means a willingness to push intellectual boundaries. There are no safe or easy answers. I tell my students they need to know this, not because it is on an exam, but because that’s what it takes to be an effective advocate in the real world."

"I think creativity requires problem-solving and developing new ideas. I also believe the best ideas are generated in groups. Creative Thought Matters is the environment Skidmore fosters to provide a learning experience filled with inquiry, participation, and growth."

"Creative thought matters is more of a mentality that all Skidmore students embrace, essentially that you can be whoever you want to be, do whatever you want to do. It’s not a slogan. I’ve been able to use it in all aspects of my Skidmore experience, in class, in my social life, even in planning my future."

The Liberal Arts
A Creative Curriculum

Any liberal arts school will tell you that interdisciplinary learning is important. But we take it a step further. By centering Creative Thought in our curriculum, students are free to assess who they are, what they want to learn, and the life and career they want to develop. It's an education unlike any other.
